Jewellery Care and Cleaning Guide
Jewellery Care and Cleaning Guide
Keep your favourite pieces radiant for years to come
Jewellery is more than decoration. It is a reflection of sentiment, beauty and craftsmanship. With simple care, your Prism and Pearl pieces will stay luminous for decades. Here is how to protect, store and clean your jewellery so it continues to shine.
Everyday Jewellery Care
- Store jewellery in a dry, closed container away from humidity.
- Use soft pouches or padded boxes to prevent scratches.
- Keep metals and gemstones from touching each other.
- Prevent tangles by threading fine chains through straws or using jewellery organisers.
- Avoid storing pieces in bathrooms or open spaces that collect moisture and dust.
- Handle pieces carefully. Dropping or piling jewellery together creates small scratches over time.
A well designed jewellery box is ideal. Even individual soft pouches will protect your pieces, especially when travelling.
Gold Jewellery
Gold is luxurious and durable but still benefits from mindful care. Remove gold rings before cleaning, swimming or applying lotions. Chemicals and friction can dull the surface. Wipe your piece gently with a soft cloth after each wear to remove oils and residue.

Sterling Silver Jewellery
Sterling silver naturally tarnishes as it reacts with air and moisture. This is normal and easy to care for.
- Store silver in an airtight bag or box.
- Use a silver polishing cloth regularly.
- For deeper cleaning use warm water and mild soap then dry completely.
Tarnish does not damage silver. It simply needs gentle removal. Every Prism and Pearl piece comes with a complimentary cleaning cloth for your convenience.
Gold Vermeil and Plated Jewellery
Gold vermeil features thick gold layered over sterling silver. Standard plating is thinner and requires gentle care.
- Avoid chemicals, perfumes and abrasive cloths.
- Wipe gently with a soft cloth after wear.
- Avoid silver dips or strong polish which can strip the finish.
If plating fades, your piece can be professionally re plated.
Gemstone and Moissanite Jewellery
- Use a soft brush with warm, soapy water to remove build up.
- Avoid ultrasonic cleaners for pearls, opals or porous gems.
- Dry gently and store pieces separately to prevent scratches.

Cleaning Methods
Soap and Water
Mix warm water with mild soap then brush gently. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth.
Ultrasonic Cleaner
Suitable for moissanite and diamond. Avoid for pearls, opals and oxidised metals. Follow your machine instructions.
Polishing Cloth
Use a professional jewellery cloth to remove tarnish and restore shine.
Electrochemical Bath for Silver
Line a bowl with foil then add hot water, salt and baking soda. Soak for ten minutes then rinse and dry thoroughly.

Cleaning Mistakes to Avoid
Avoid home remedies that use vinegar, lemon juice, baking soda paste or harsh sprays. These can damage metal finishes and gemstones. Gentle cleaners are always the safest choice.
Professional Cleaning
For fine or sentimental pieces, a yearly professional clean is worthwhile. A jeweller can safely clean the piece and check for loose stones.
